Gary E. Smith, Owner and Founder of
SOA Networks

Mr. Smith graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree and major in Computer Science. In 2000, he received a Diploma in Programming in Object-Oriented Software Technologies from the University of Alberta.

Gary has worked in a variety positions including R&D, product development, product management and business development for the following companies: VeriSign, Illuminet, MessagingDirect, Nortel Networks, iQMetrix and TELUS Communications.

Products and applications he was responsible for included: Advanced Intelligent Network (AIN) applications,  Inter-Carrier Billing Platforms for wireline and wireline carriers, Electronic Bill Presentation and Payment (EBPP) applications, secure email messaging applications, Telephone Systems, Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) applications, telecommunications networking products, and a variety of Business Intelligence (BI) Solutions.

Gary writes articles, blogs and speaks on Service-Oriented Networking and related topics and his interest in the application of SOA to networking and SOA in the Telecom Industry.  He is the editor for a series of blogs: THE SOA NETWORK and his company SOA Networks (under construction) provides consulting on XML, Web Services and SOA Networking: interoperability, management, governance, security, and identity.

SOA Security - Inherently Different than What We're Use To!

In this presentation Gary outlines the differences between transport-level security versus message-level security.  Since security is modelled after a world based on outdated views ie. client-server; security simply don't work in a Service-Oriented World.  We need to model our world differently and secure the world differently in a SOA.

SOA security dilemma: flexibility versus control
What are the major differences between message-level security and transport-level security?
Current state of SOA security standards and how they relate to other standards
What are the challenges in ensuring the security of your web services and SOA?

SOA Networking - SOA Adoption and Impact on Networks

In this presentation, Gary will discuss the adoption of Service-Oriented Architecture in general and its specific impact on telecommunications networks.  As services migrate beyond the immediate enterprise, services impact networks by the increased volume and the very nature of verbose SOAP messaging.  In response to this impact a growing number of networking vendors are providing solutions in the form of XML/SOA appliances, firewalls, and gateways which incorporate XML processing, security, policy management and other functionality.  While this market is in its infancy, the trend to migrate functionality to networking devices will grow as this functionality is commoditized and standards become more widely adopted.

                                       SOA in Telecom 2007

Day 1 Tutorial - Putting SOA into Perspective in the Telecom World

This 5 hour tutorial was intended to present how the SOA Vision is evolving beyond the enterprise and how SOA platforms are evolving and impacting Networks - SOA Networking. Secondly the tutorial outlined the use of SOA in the telecom industry from integration of operational services to use in Service Creation Environments for developing new network services. Other areas being impacted are Unified Communications Platforms and inter-carrier revenue sharing and billing.  Finally, how is Web 2.0 and SOA (Global SOA) changing the way products and services are being developed and delivered.

Day 2 - Opening Talk - Raised on Internet

"Many of the new Web 2.0 start-ups are being developed from the "Net Generation" who are "Raised on the Internet".  These Web 2.0 solution providers continue to build over the traditional Telecom Service Providers and pose a major threat to these traditional providers and are presently providing little in the way of "value-add".  The traditional response for the telco's is to protect their interest in the underlying infrastructure ie. IP and charge more for QoS.  However the more progressive Telco's are embracing and supporting these new Web 2.0 solution providers. The Net Geners are driving new idea and product generation and not coming from the R&D Ivory Towers through their use of the internet. - NetGen use and think fundamentally different than previous generations."

In 2002, I became interested in XML and the evolution to Web Services.  Shortly after I became interested in Service-Oriented Architecture.  During the next couple of years I had the opportunity to talk to a number of leaders in the industry, but thought many were short-sighted with their focus on Enterprise SOA.   With my background in networking, I felt that it would be a matter of time before the focus on Enterprise SOA would shift beyond simply integrating applications within the Enterprise to sharing services across networks.

My interest has primarily been on the impact SOA is having on networking as we move to build Service-Oriented Communities and Economies.  However I am also interested in the impact and the application of SOA to the Telecom industry.  SOA has impacted many Enterprises, but Service Providers are impacted more since they not only use SOA to architect their operational systems, but they also use SOA to deliver new network services.

I hope you enjoy my blogs and their focus on SOA Networking and the Telecommunications Industry.
