SOA moves beyond the Enterprise - How are Vendors Positioning for Multi-Enterprise Service Connectivity?
SOA moves beyond the Enterprise - How are Vendors Positioning for Multi-Enterprise Service Connectivity?

So what is SOA going to look like beyond the enterprise? How are we going to manage services amongst a number of enterprises. While the Enterprise Service Bus works well within an enterprise SOA environment - will it scale for multi-enterprise SOA Environments?
David Chappell wrote the book on ESB, he now touts the SOA-enabled Grid (or SOA Grids) for Oracle. Microsoft which never had a full fledged ESB is now touting the Internet Service Bus (ISB).
So are you confused yet?
Well it is going to get a whole lot more complicated for the next few years as SOA and Networking Vendors position to take advantage of this growing market.
So here is a run down on who's doing what:
IBM has positioned WebSphere Datapower products as low end ESB's that can extend the reach of their WebSphere products.
Oracle and Tibco are talking about SOA based Grid Computing.
IONA, and Progress Actional are talking about Distributed Computing.
Microsoft with their OSLO introduction are pushing the idea (half-baked by some reports) of an Internet Service Bus.
Software AG has partnered with Layer 7 Technologies to provide security support, but may be too early to see what comes out of this partnership.
Cisco is working with SAP to provide their GRC Solution.
Amazon.com is trying to do it with its Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2).
Google “official” cloud computing announcement is a joint educational venture with IBM.
The bottom line is there is a lot of activity, but no real leaders yet as how this is going to play out.
Keep tuned to as I continue to follow the efforts being made in this emerging marketplace.
