SEATTLE, AUGUST 19, 2008 – F5 Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: FFIV), the global leader in Application Delivery Networking, today announced that Averitt Express increased performance of its web-based self-service freight booking applications using the F5® BIG-IP® WebAccelerator™ solution. Upon deployment, Averitt’s customers reported a measurable improvement in website responsiveness almost immediately.

Averitt Express, which services over 100 countries, is a leading freight transportation and supply chain management company. Following an upgrade of the company’s web self-service applications, Averitt customers experienced a slowdown in online booking performance, which led to a 30 percent drop in traffic.

“We live in a ‘serve me now’ society,” said Tony McBroom, Internet Development Leader at Averitt. “Our customers mandate that we provide efficient web services.” Averitt chose BIG-IP WebAccelerator to boost site performance and improve user experience. WebAccelerator is a web application delivery solution that helps organizations overcome performance issues involving browsers, web application platforms, and wide area network (WAN) latency. “We saw an immediate improvement in site performance when we deployed BIG-IP WebAccelerator,” added McBroom.

“To redevelop our applications or to purchase a new application server would have meant huge costs,” said Ray Wilkins, Networking Associate at Averitt. “Not only does the F5 solution meet our acceleration needs, but it does so without any additional overhead. WebAccelerator has been running for over a year with no downtime or performance issues. It’s been our ‘magic bullet’ that solved all latency and speed issues in one fell swoop.”

Averitt realized substantial performance gains by installing a single WebAccelerator device at the company’s data center, while competing solutions required additional devices to be installed at each remote location. With less hardware to purchase, companies like Averitt can more easily achieve a positive return on their acceleration investment. Averitt was also able to optimize their business applications without recoding or implementing larger servers.

“Website performance can make or break important customer relationships,” said Jason Needham, Sr. Director of Product Management at F5. “With WebAccelerator, service-oriented organizations like Averitt can overcome performance issues and provide virtually instant access to the dynamic web applications their users—and their business—depend on. In addition, WebAccelerator enables companies to scale acceleration technology to meet their needs, as it can be deployed as a single device in the data center or expanded to a symmetric deployment for added performance gains at remote locations.”

About Averitt

Established in 1971, Averitt Express is a leading provider of freight transportation and supply chain management with international reach to more than 100 countries. The company specializes in delivering customized solutions for service offerings that include less-than-truckload, truckload, time-critical, importing/exporting and supply chain management. Backed by successful execution for hundreds of customers, Averitt’s supply chain management capabilities include dedicated fleet operations, warehousing services and transportation management.

For more information, call 1-800-AVERITT or visit www.averittexpress.com.

About F5 Networks

F5 Networks is the global leader in Application Delivery Networking.
NEEDHAM, Mass., Aug 18, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The SOA Consortium(TM) today announced the availability of a podcast and slide deck of the presentation by K. Scott Morrison, VP of Engineering and Chief Architect at Layer 7 Technologies, on "How to Fail at SOA," recorded at the SOA Consortium meeting in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in June. To access the podcast, visit http://www.soa-consortium.org/pr-ksm.

Calling on Layer 7 Technologies' six years of experience Scott warned meeting attendees about repeated patterns of bad practices, pitfalls and bad decisions. Focused in the security realm, Scott reenacted customer scenarios that highlighted breakdowns with goals, teams, planning, knowledge and physical design. For each identified problem, or anti-pattern, Scott provided insights on how SOA practitioners can recover from, or better yet, avoid the pitfall. These insights covered a wide range, including proper understanding of security standards, security design tips, skills, team composition, training, and business outcome identification. Scott pointed out how SOA based implementations - with their highly distributed, cross stack natures - bring together a diverse group of new stakeholders that must collaborate for success.

In closing, Scott encouraged attendees to treat security and management as first class citizens of SOA efforts, rather than falling into the trap of patchwork retrofitting.

To hear all of the insights Scott Morrison presented, download the 46-minute podcast and accompanying slide presentation at http://www.soa-consortium.org/pr-ksm.

Vienna, Austria (PRWEB) August 18, 2008 -- The Future Internet Symposium (FIS) - to be held 28-30 September 2008 in Vienna, Austria - is a venue for European and international researchers to share their work on next generation Internet technologies. FIS is a scientific forum for the European Union's Future Internet Initiative, an effort to align European Internet research on the shared challenges presented by Europe's increasingly Internet-based society and economy. FIS is intended to bridge traditional disciplinary boundaries of Internet research, emphasizing the use of machine understandable semantics to enable diverse communities, devices, and organizational groupings to share Internet resources. The symposium is organized by Semantic Technology Institute International (STI International), the Vienna-based hub of a worldwide network of renowned academic and industrial research groups working on semantic technologies, with support of the Austrian Computer Society.

Keynote speaker Joao da Silva, head of the `Network and Communication' section in the European Commission's Information Society Directorate. Joao oversees the EU's Framework 7 research on mobile communications, broadband networks including satellite communications, audio-visual and home networks, trust and security, software engineering, and ICT for business applications.

We are pleased to announce William H. Dutton as a keynote speaker of FIS. He is Director of the Oxford Internet Institute and Professor of Internet Studies at the University of Oxford.

Invited paper `Internet of Things in an Enterprise Context' Stephan Haller is a senior researcher in the Smart Items research program at SAP Research, Zurich. He leads the SENSEI project, integrating wireless sensor networks into the network, and is heavily involved in international RFID standardization.

Have a look at the detailed program.

Workshops 29 September

OneSpace: Blending physical and digital spaces on the Internet The Internet reshapes our perception of place and time: micro-blogging induces new notions of spatial and social proximity; users spend ever more time in virtual worlds like Second Life; the Global Positioning System and Web mapping technologies blur the boundaries between spatial representation and perception. This workshop will cover recent developments in this area, examining representations of physical/virtual spaces and topologies, the 3- and 4-D Internet, geo-located services and sensors, `Sense of place and presence', and mobility.

Complex Event Processing for the Future Internet Today's Internet is primarily a passive one, where most actions are initiated by a user. A Future Internet will be active, with software acting and reacting to events without human intervention. This requires new models, methods and tools for dealing efficiently with complex events, covering their representation, acquisition, aggregation and consumption. Especially important is the processing of events with better abstraction, combining them in a specific context: time, space, semantics - so called complex event processing (CEP).

Tutorials 28 September

Triple Space Computing: Large-Scale Integrated Knowledge Applications Triple Space Computing is a novel 'space based' approach to large-scale knowledge distribution and coordination. This tutorial introduces the concept and existing implementations, and gives a concrete demonstration based on a Digital Asset Marketplace for a telecommunications company. Attendees get hands-on experience with a Triple Space kernel, and learn how to apply it as communication and coordination middleware for their Semantic Web applications.

Beyond Google Earth: Surfing Petabyte Maps in the Future Internet Satellite imagery applications like Google Earth are a powerful and integral part of the Internet experience. This tutorial presents the state of the art in semantic Web services for Terabyte scale multidimensional raster data from applications spanning CAT scans, geological exploration, and climate and cosmology simulations. The tutorial covers raster services, addressing modelling, architecture, optimization, and storage management. Applications in geo- and life-sciences and the Grid will be emphasized. Real-life use-cases are drawn from scientific projects and standardization efforts in the Open GeoSpatial Consortium (www.opengeospatial.org).

Agile Future Internet Applications: An Introduction to Emerging Data, Service, and Process
Technologies Much of today's software is not installed on users' computers, but accessed as an online service. This tutorial covers the technologies that enable this: the standard protocols (HTTP), data formats (XML, RDF, and OWL), application interfaces (SOAP, REST), and business process models (BPEL and BPMN), and provides a new perspective on how to assemble them. We introduce emerging technologies with large potential for future Internet services.

Semantic Management of Business Processes in the Future Internet The tutorial explains and demonstrates how the combination of Business Process Management (BPM) and Semantic Web Services (SWS) technologies can contribute to the vision of Internet of Services and multi-partner processes. It presents the state of the art in the areas of BPM and SWS, motivating the need for explicit use of semantics to overcome future Internet challenges. A technical framework integrating SWS and BPM will be demonstrated.

Registration is open.
ESB, design-time governance, runtime management, and XML security gateways are must-haves for SOA. Or are they?

It doesn't help that the SOA intermediary market is undergoing rapid consolidation as startups seek to expand beyond their niches and larger players offer suites that claim to cover all of an enterprise's service integration needs. In our report, we examine the current state of the four main SOA intermediary product categories--enterprise service bus, design-time governance, runtime management, and XML security gateways--and examine how they overlap and how vendors within each category plan to attain world domination. But no product will eliminate problems unless IT first understands that SOA is a design concept, even though it's often confused with specific technologies and practices, such as middleware and application integration.

For the complete article and report:

Effective SOA Requires Intermediaries

SOURCE: InformationWeek

_______________________________________________________________________________

Check out the latest news on SOA Appliances & SOA Gateways: www.soaappliances.com

_________________________________________________________________________________________

It seems funny that a chip manufacturer would be positioning a "soft appliance" over a hardware appliance but here they go:

The Intel SOA Expressway “soft appliance” design and feature emphasis is to improve the performance, scalability, security and manageability of SOA and other distributed systems architectures. Although it is a SOA infrastructure software stack with orchestration, mediation, routing and integration capabilities, the design and feature emphasis is in different areas than many other implementations. This has resulted in a different internal product architecture and focus on somewhat different usage models. For example, in the area of architecture many ESB products rely on a specific implementation of messaging middleware to perform many of their functions where SOA Expressway can provide its feature set such as message acceleration, data integration, security, routing and manageability features on any JMS capable message bus (open source or vendor provided). In the area of usage models, SOA Expressway operates as a very effective, high-speed perimeter security service providing high speed mediation functions like attachment encrypt / decrypt, sign / verify, LDAP integration, and policy enforcement.

The XML Management Interface is the third way to configure and administer the WebSphere
DataPower SOA Appliance, besides the WebGUI and the CLI.

The DataPower device can be completely configured and managed through the XML
Management Interface. If enabled, this interface allows administrators to send status and configuration requests to the DataPower appliance through a standard SOAP interface, using SOAP messages.

This interface requires the HTTPS protocol for all communication. By default, the interface
acts as an SSL server, using the default system keys coming with the device. These keys are
the same keys that are used for the WebGUI and SSH interface (CLIs). If desired, administrators can employ their own keys.

Table of Contents:

Product Description:

Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) typically comprise multiple disparate applications, servers and network elements for any given business process. This diversity can make securing, monitoring and managing these services very complex. SecureSpan's role is to enforce runtime service-level security, data manipulation and integration-related policies for SOA. Services registered in Systinet 2 Registry can have policies applied to and enforced by SecureSpan and these polices can in turn be stored in Systinet 2 Registry, providing a single authoritative repository of both service interfaces and applicable policies. Once policies have been created and are being enforced, HP SOA Manager can be used to view SecureSpan service performance metrics, subscribe to and receive fault alerts and correlate data from SecureSpan with other systems to provide an overall view of the end-to-end business process.

For more information:

http://h20229.www2.hp.com/partner/isv/Layer7.jsp

_______________________________________________________________________________

Check out the Official SOA Appliances & SOA Gateways Web Site: www.soaappliances.com

_________________________________________________________________________________________
